Specificity of Fitness Routines

If you played football and you were a receiver, you wouldn’t spend time throwing a football.  I suspect you would spend time catching, running routes, and learning plays.  The same is true for any sport, the truth being that you should train and practice in a specific skill building manor.  Before we continue lets be clear that a athletes fitness regime should include; training, practicing, and performing.  All are different but they all intermingle with one another.  Training is the act of strengthening specific muscles or skills needed to perform your sport.  Practicing is going through the exact motions you will encounter in your sport.  And performing is the time when you put all the elements together, game time.  Continue reading

Dairy, to eat or not to eat?

The consumption of dairy products have been one of those iffy topics for myself as of the last few years.  I can agree that there are nutritional benefits of consuming dairy but on the same hand I can agree that we do not need these types of foods.  I am not praising dairy and its consumption and I am not patronizing it and saying you should absolutely not eat it ever.  I am just looking at it from both sides of the spectrum, just like I do with any other food. A look in My Pantry

Before we get into things I want to make it clear that the best thing you can do for your health is to eat fresh food as often as possible.  However we all know the reality of things.  We live in a fast paced hectic world and convenience prevails over fresh a lot of the time.  So in order to escape the trap of eating a entire bag of potato chips,  because you were hungry and that is what was there, stock your pantry up on better healthier options.  Continue reading

Effects of Meat Consumption

cattle_at_pasture_usda_large[1]In past blogs I have wrote about eating meat.  More specifically I outlined the importance, in regards to your health, as to where you are getting your meat from.  Knowing the source of your meat (organic, grass-fed, pastured, etc.) also happens to benefit more than your personal health.  The over consumption of commercial or CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) meat is also detrimental to the environment. CSA: Local, Fresh, Organic

The end of April is rapidly approaching, which provoked me to post this before all the CSA shares are bought up.  A CSA is a wonderful way to conveniently eat local and organic.  For those of you not familiar with a CSA you still have time to get in on the action.  Community Shared Agriculture is a program in which you buy into a farm.  Basically you pay a lump sum upfront and in return you receive a basket of produce from a local farm of your choice.  At a predetermined pick up location you receive a basket of assorted produce from the farm week to week.  Each farm is different and there are other options available from the standard weekly option (pick up at farm, basket trades, bi monthly, ½ shares, payment plans, etc).  These shares are not just limited to produce.   Meat, cheese, and coffee are other options I have discovered. Cardio Training Drawbacks

jogging[1]Just so we are clear, if you didn’t already know I do not recommend excessive amounts of cardiovascular training.  It is one thing if you truly enjoy running but it is a completely different matter if you are going on long runs to get in shape.  I understand that some of you love running, competing in Triathlons, and biking hours on end.   By all means continue to do these races and go jogging if and only if that is your passion.  Do not continue to partake in a long duration cardio type training if you are looking for a way to get in shape.  The fact is, excessive cardio training can be un-healthy.  If you are just trying to be healthy (more on that subject and being fit vs. being healthy in a future post) and loose weight well you will get more bang for your buck with short duration full body high intensity training (such as rock climbing on a lot of hard routes in a very short time frame).     Continue reading

The “Dirty Dozen”

If you are visiting this site then it is likely that you invest some time and or money into taking care of yourself.  Part of that would be eating fresh produce.  Yes filling your diet with produce is a good step to great health but have you considered to find out what produce is safe to eat and what is risky in regards to pesticide exposure?  There are times when we can get away with eating conventional produce over organic and times when we should avoid imported produce.  Below you will find two lists of conventional produce tested for a myriad of toxic pesticides.  The lists are separated into highly contaminated and trace amounts or no contaminates.  Read up and use these lists as a guide to when to go organic vs. conventional if organic 100% of the time is not a option.  Continue reading

Affirmations to Reach Goals

Life is full of misguided adventures and desires.  There are vast amounts of things that we can pursue, achieve, explore and master.  The most important thing however is what you are doing right now.  If you continuously worry and look ahead to what is coming next or what you hope to achieve in the future, well then when and if that point comes you will not enjoy it thoroughly because you will then start looking ahead to the next thing.  Yes, at times you need to be planning for your future and set long term goals but in order to achieve those goals you must take action now.  Continue reading
