Food For Thought

What does being fit mean to you?  What does being healthy mean to you?   If you read my last post, Fit vs. Healthy, you could probably answer those questions with confidence.  I hope you have started to develop a sense of those terms and have worked them into your life in a way that makes sense for your self.  There is no secret equation to balancing the two nor is there a definitive correct answer.  The closest thing to being correct is doing what you truly believe in and love with the full awareness of how one decision is affecting the other.  For example,  in order to be fit enough to have every muscle in your body bulge out you may be sacrificing your health by spending to much time in the gym and not enough time enjoying life.  The point is, be aware of the disconnect between health and fitness but at the same time be fully confident and educated on what you are doing.  If you bring a passion and awareness towards your physical goals, then happiness will add to your health.

Fit vs. Healthy

Have you ever looked up to someone because they are Fit?  Have you ever been envious of a person because of their high level of fitness or their ability to crank out pull ups in their sleep?  Have you looked at a extremely muscular body and just though, wow I wish I was that in shape?  I’m sure most of us can answer yes to any or all of those questions.  However have you ever taken a moment to think about your health?  In fact have you ever considered the difference between being fit and being healthy?  A overly muscular person or a person that can run a marathon at a record setting pace isn’t necessarily a model of good human health. Olive Oil

Olive oil is a great source of omega 3 fats and can be beneficial when used properly.  Proper use does not include cooking with it, especially above 200 degrees.  Oils have a smoke point; a smoke point is the heat a oil can tolerate before being destroyed.  When that oil is destroyed it completely wipes out the benefits of the oil because it becomes oxidized and rancid.  A oxidized oil becomes harmful to your health because they produce free radicals in your body which can lead to inflammation.  To note on a previous post; cholesterol is not bad, it is the oxidized cholesterol which is harmful.  Continue reading

A look in My Pantry

Before we get into things I want to make it clear that the best thing you can do for your health is to eat fresh food as often as possible.  However we all know the reality of things.  We live in a fast paced hectic world and convenience prevails over fresh a lot of the time.  So in order to escape the trap of eating a entire bag of potato chips,  because you were hungry and that is what was there, stock your pantry up on better healthier options.  Continue reading

Effects of Meat Consumption

cattle_at_pasture_usda_large[1]In past blogs I have wrote about eating meat.  More specifically I outlined the importance, in regards to your health, as to where you are getting your meat from.  Knowing the source of your meat (organic, grass-fed, pastured, etc.) also happens to benefit more than your personal health.  The over consumption of commercial or CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) meat is also detrimental to the environment. The “Dirty Dozen”

If you are visiting this site then it is likely that you invest some time and or money into taking care of yourself.  Part of that would be eating fresh produce.  Yes filling your diet with produce is a good step to great health but have you considered to find out what produce is safe to eat and what is risky in regards to pesticide exposure?  There are times when we can get away with eating conventional produce over organic and times when we should avoid imported produce.  Below you will find two lists of conventional produce tested for a myriad of toxic pesticides.  The lists are separated into highly contaminated and trace amounts or no contaminates.  Read up and use these lists as a guide to when to go organic vs. conventional if organic 100% of the time is not a option.  Continue reading

We mostly associate the kitchen as a place in which our food is prepared   However growing up I have always viewed the kitchen as much more.  To my family the kitchen has been the social hub of the home.  It is rare to be at the Kubiesa residence for a party and to not find yourself hanging out in the Kitchen.  When I arrive home where do I hang out and socialize with my family?  In the kitchen. Coffee follow up

Figure out “YOU” before figuring out your workout

 

I have witnessed many people (myself included during my uneducated rambunctious teenage years) train with the philosophy of going 100% all the time.  If you are not working out every chance you get and at a high intensity all the time, then you are missing an opportunity to get stronger.  WRONG.  You are gaining an opportunity to decrease achievements over time or worse, get hurt and hence lose out on a lot more.
